I’ve got a fever!!!!

Like I have said “I’ve got a fever!!!!” (เป็นไข้!!) Oh my goshhhh. I just don’t know how this could happen to me. My world is spinning and my body feels like a volcano getting ready to erupt! Worse than that I had to cancel all of my lovely students today coz I’m so scared that I was going to spread this ailment to them (sorry kids (>_<) )

At school, I carried small alcohol gel all the time to wash my hands and I even had a gigantic one on my desk for my students! Please god, let me get well soon so I could get back to work!

Anyway, I guess I must have been babbling (พูดพล่าม) for too long now, let’s get back to our today’s lesson ดีกว่า.

ใครอ่านคำที่ขีดเส้นใต้ข้างบนแล้วเง็งมั่ง…จำทฤษฎี ถอดหัว ถอดหาง ถอดตัวที่ทิ้งไว้คราวที่แล้วได้ไม๊ (เยี่ยมมม…จำกันไม่ได้เรยยย แป่ว…) ม่ะเปงไร What about “root word” ล่ะ จำได้ป่ะ ถ้าได้ก็ดีแร้ว แต่ถ้าจำไม่ได้ follow me here.

ขอเริ่มกันที่ Root word (รากศัพท์) ก่อน … ทุกคนรู้กันอยู่แล้วใช่ไม๊ว่า every language in the world เนี่ยมี root ที่มาที่ไป ไม่ได้เกิดมาจากกระบอก bamboo ช่ะม๊ะ เอ้า…พูดให้ synchronize กันซิว่า our mother tongue (ภาษาเกิด) เนี่ย derive มาจากภาษาอะไร? (ตอบมาให้ด้วยน๊า เช็คความเป็นไทยกันหน่อย อิอิ) แล้ว English language ล่ะ เกิดมาจากไหน?

ดั๊นขอพูดคร่าวๆแล้วกันนะว่าภาษาของฝรั่งเนี่ย mostly จะเกิดมาจาก Greek and Latin เช่น German, French, English, Spanish, and etc. พวกเราจะสังเกตุได้ว่าตัวอักษรที่พวกเค้าใช้เนี่ย ประกอบไปด้วยตัว a, b, c เหมือนกัน แค่สะกดหรือออกเสียงต่างกันไปบ้างเท่านั้นเอง เช่นคำว่า บ้าน
English เรียก House = German เรียก Haus เห็นม๊ะ ใกล้กันม๊ากก เนื่องจากมันมี root word (ท่อนตัวของคราวที่แล้ว) ซ่อนอยู่

ภาษาอังกฤษถ้ามีแค่ root word มันก็คงหมดสนุกเพราะแปลได้แค่ความหมายเดียว เช่น “write” แปลว่า “เขียน” จบ
เค้าเลยสร้างให้มันมีคำมาเสริมข้างหน้า เรียกว่า Prefix เข้ามาด้วยจะได้เปลี่ยนความหมายได้มากขึ้น เช่น re- = again or back
พอบวก “write” ก็เลยแปลว่า write again ง่ายม๊ะ

ทีนี้ถ้าอยากทำให้คำเมื่อกี๊ กลายเป็นคนขึ้นมา ก็แค่หา คำมาต่อท้าย root word เรียกว่า Suffix เช่น -er = คน หรือ นัก
กลายเป็น rewriter = คนเขียนอีกครั้ง หรือ คนเขียนใหม่แล้ว a piece of cake! (ง่ายจัง)

ลอง recall a word from last time มาดูกัน ว่า Conference แปลว่า ประชุม ได้ไง

จริงๆแล้วคำนี้มี prefix คือคำว่า Con- แปลว่า together (ด้วยกัน ร่วมกัน)
มี root คือคำว่า “fere” แปลว่า come
มี suffix คือ -ence แปลว่า การ
รวมกัน เลยแปลว่า มาร่วมกัน หรือ ประชุม นี่เอ๊งงงง

กันลืม ขอทิ้งการบ้านไว้ให้เผื่ออยากทดสอบความรู้ที่ได้ไป ลองหา meaning ของคำต่อไปนี้มาให้หน่อย

Erupt (มาจาก e- = out + “rupt” = break) = ?
Ailment (มาจาก “ail” = ป่วย + -ment = ความ) = ?
Gigantic (มาจาก “giga” = giant) = ?
Synchronize (มาจาก Syn- = together + “chrono” = time + -ize = ทำให้คำกลายเป็น verb) = ?
Recall (ไม่ต้องใบ้ก็น่าจะรู้โน๊ะ) = ?

A Sense of Belonging

Everyone wants to be wanted. It’s a no brainer, really. It’s a notion deeply held by anthropologists, and one that certainly explains the way humanity has banded together in social groups since history began. Through shared experiences, people in these groups formed identities that were relative to each other. Essentially, playing to each other’s strengths increased each individual’s chances of survival

Are We Truly Among The Happy?

Individuals in our day and age are afforded more access to increasingly advanced tools to work with. Effectively, what this means is that each person has the ability to do tasks that required more people in the past.

Although the rise in productivity has been immense, such a progression affects us – as social animals – negatively as well. Simply because it isn’t needed in our daily lives, interactions with others have decreased as a natural consequence, and our abilities to communicate effectively become increasingly limited.

Interestingly enough though, there has been strong research showing that throughout human history, playing games have been invaluable for people to learn concepts and develop communication skills both quickly and effectively.

Feelings of Powerlessness

We live in a very connected society, and recent statistics have shown that the average Facebook user has more than 100 friends. Within these statistics, however, lies an undercurrent of insularity:

Many of us have great ideas and thoughts, but keep them within us due to the fact that we feel that there isn’t an avenue for us to express them. This affects our day to day interactions negatively, and gives us a sense that we’re stuck in mediocrity –because we feel we can’t make a difference.

Chang Flavoured Soda Water

It looks like Chang have launched some flavoured versions of their popular bottled soda water. Today I was in my local 7 and I spotted a Chang soda water with a green label which after a closer look I saw it was apple mint flavour! There was also another flavour available which I will check out next time.

I had the Chang apple mint soda water on its own but I think it would go great with vodka so will be stocking up soon for the next time we have drinks at the flat.
